Is My Dog Overweight? Use Our Free Healthy Weight Calculator

If you’ve ever looked at your dog and wondered whether they’re carrying a little extra weight, you’re not alone, and you’re asking exactly the right question. According to veterinary data, the number of overweight pets is on the rise, and excess weight is one of the most common and preventable health problems in dogs today.

The tricky part is that weight alone doesn’t tell the full story. A healthy Labrador and an overweight Labrador can weigh the same, the difference shows up in their body shape, not the number on the scale. That’s why vets use a system called the Body Condition Score (BCS) rather than relying on weight charts alone.

What is the Body Condition Score?

The Body Condition Score is a quick visual and hands-on method for estimating body fat and muscle. An ideal dog has ribs that are easy to feel with light pressure but not visible, a clear waist when viewed from above, and an abdominal tuck visible from the side. Scores run from 1 (severely underweight) to 9 (severely obese), with 4–5 representing ideal condition.

Our calculator uses the BCS system, the same approach your vet uses, combined with your dog’s breed size, age, sex, and current weight to estimate their ideal healthy weight and give you a personalised assessment.

Why having a healthy weight matters for your pup?

Carrying even a modest amount of excess weight puts extra strain on your dog’s joints, heart, liver, and lungs. It increases the risk of diabetes, arthritis, and breathing difficulties. It can also meaningfully shorten their lifespan. On the other end of the scale, underweight dogs may be missing vital nutrients or dealing with an underlying health issue that needs attention.

How to use this calculator:

Enter your dog’s size, age, sex, and current weight, then select the Body Condition Score that best matches how your dog looks and feels right now. You’ll get an instant result with your dog’s estimated healthy weight range and practical, personalised tips, whether they need to lose, gain, or simply maintain.

Always consult your vet if you’re concerned about your dog’s weight or health.

📖 What is Body Condition Score (BCS)?

The Body Condition Score is the system vets use to assess whether a dog is at a healthy weight. Unlike a simple scale reading, BCS accounts for muscle mass and body fat. It’s scored on a scale of 1–9, where 4–5 is ideal. You assess it by looking and feeling — can you see ribs? Feel them easily? Is there a visible waist?

1 — Emaciated
Ribs, spine and hip bones very visible. No body fat. Severe muscle loss. Immediate vet care needed.
2 — Very Thin
Ribs, spine and pelvis easily visible. No palpable fat. Some muscle loss evident.
3 — Thin
Ribs easily felt, may be slightly visible. Top of spine visible. Waist clearly visible.
4 — Lean Ideal
Ribs easily felt, not visible. Waist visible from above. Slight abdominal tuck. ✓
5 — Ideal
Ribs felt with slight fat covering. Waist visible from above. Abdominal tuck present. ✓
6 — Slightly Heavy
Ribs felt with increased effort. Waist discernible but not prominent. Slight fat deposits.
7 — Overweight
Ribs difficult to feel under heavy fat cover. Waist barely visible. Obvious fat deposits on back and base of tail.
8 — Obese
Ribs not palpable under very heavy fat. No waist. Heavy fat deposits on neck, limbs and spine.
9 — Severely Obese
Massive fat deposits everywhere. No body shape definition. Mobility may be impaired. Urgent vet attention needed.
