The Real Annual Cost of Dog Ownership

Everyone knows dogs aren’t free. But the true annual cost of owning a dog tends to catch people off guard, not because it’s necessarily unaffordable, but because the costs are spread across so many categories that it’s easy to underestimate the total until the bills start adding up.

According to a 2025 Rover survey of 1,000 U.S. dog owners, the annual cost of owning a dog now ranges from $1,390 to $5,295, an increase of up to 130% compared to 2020. And over a 10-year lifetime, the average cost of owning a dog in the US is approximately $34,258. Those numbers vary enormously depending on your dog’s size, breed, and how you choose to care for them, and they look very different depending on where in the world you live.

Why most dog cost guides aren’t very useful

Most articles give you a ballpark range — say, “$1,000 to $5,000 a year” — without helping you understand what your specific situation is likely to cost. A toy breed in a budget-conscious household costs a fraction of what a giant breed in a premium, daycare-and-groomer lifestyle costs. A senior dog costs more in vet care than a healthy adult. A long-coated breed costs significantly more in grooming than a short-coated one.

Our calculator is built differently. It gives you a personalised estimate based on your dog’s actual size, coat type, age, and your lifestyle, with real local market pricing for the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and Western Europe. Not currency conversions, actual researched local costs for food, vet fees, insurance, grooming, boarding, and more.

What the calculator covers:

  • Food, treats, and supplements
  • Routine and emergency vet care
  • Pet insurance and registration
  • Professional and at-home grooming
  • Equipment, toys, beds, and supplies
  • Optional extras: training, daycare, boarding, dog walkers

Every figure is pre-filled based on your inputs, but fully editable — so you can adjust any line to reflect your exact situation. You’ll get a monthly, annual, and lifetime cost estimate, a breakdown by category, and personalised money-saving tips that don’t require cutting corners on your dog’s care.
